Correlation Averaging of Self Assembled Molecules
Self-assembled Didodecyl-benzene molecules from a STM image have been averaged and the average image exhibits the finer details of the inner molecular structure.

Average Image
The average image exhibits the finer details of the inner molecular structure.

Standard Deviation
The Standard Deviation image showing the lowest values on the right side of the benzene ring reflects the least dynamic part of the molecule and reveals how it is attached to the graphite substrate.

Cross Correlation
Cross correlation between Raw Image and Average Image.
This image is used by the algorithm to find regions with good matches to the row zoom image. By adding all these regions the average image is obtained. The high quality is assured by sub-pixel alignment.

Fourier Transform
The cross correlation image is found by use of Fast Fourier Transformations.

Versatile Technique
The Correlation Averaging technique can also be applied for robust step height calibration and uniformity evaluation. The method works on profiles as well as images.
